The term “IQ test” is misleading, it relies on two problematic assumptions. First,  intelligence can be measured. Second, if intelligence can be measured, IQ tests are an appropriate tool for doing so. Both assumptions are flawed.

I won’ t elaborate on how I arrived at this conclusion. Just consider a simple example. Suppose Ma Long from table tennis, Jordan from basketball, Phelps from swimming, Bolt from running, how can you design a test to compare their athletic skills or even give a detailed value to each person to tell who is the best athlete in the world?Similarly, the brain is so versatile that there is no universal assessment of its ability. Simply claim intelligence can be measured without valid scientific proof is nothing but amateur science. In fact, I believe intelligence cannot be  measured (perhaps future advanced technology might do so, but not now).

Back to the nature of these tests, they are in essence puzzles, which are usually designed with clever ideas hidden within the limited information provided by their creators. While solving these puzzles does require intelligence, it does not guarantee that they are reliable measures of intelligence. In fact, these are two totally different stories. Puzzle solving measures the ability of puzzle solving, that’s all.

The conclusion also helps explain why many individuals with high IQ scores do not achieve commensurate success in real life, because IQ score is not intelligence in the first place. Therefore, do not equate your IQ score with your intelligence. Just enjoy the pleasure of puzzle solving.
